Radisys Management System - Automated Report Generation

Project Overview

Redesigned a critical workflow in the Radisys Management System that was eating up 4+ hours of Integration Engineers' time. By automating screenshot capture and report generation, we cut that time to 3 minutes and doubled their daily productivity.

The Problem

Integration Engineers were spending 240-260 minutes manually navigating through RMS to capture screenshots for Acceptance Test Procedures. Every single test case required screenshots, and the navigation was complex enough that it became the most frustrating part of their job.

The workflow had two phases:

• Commissioning Phase: 130 minutes

• Integration Phase: 260 minutes

Service Testing alone—part of the Integration Phase—took 150 minutes. That's where engineers had to navigate different screens just to capture screenshots. It was tedious, repetitive, and a complete waste of their expertise.

Research

I conducted contextual interviews with Integration Engineers to understand exactly where their time was going. The pain point was clear: they weren't frustrated with the testing itself, but with the manual, screen-by-screen navigation required to document it.

Design Approach

Given time and budget constraints, I focused on a solution we could ship quickly. I created high-fidelity mockups and reviewed them with Integration Engineers, Product Managers, the UI Team, and Pre-Sales Managers.

The key insight was simple: the system already knew what configurations needed to be documented for each test case. Why make humans manually collect and screenshot them?

The Solution

I designed an automated report generation feature that:

Understands Test Cases
The system knows what needs to be documented for each test case in the Acceptance Test Procedures.

Collects Configurations Automatically
Instead of engineers navigating to multiple screens and taking screenshots, the system gathers all relevant configurations in the background.

Generates Complete Reports
In 2-3 minutes, it produces a comprehensive document with all the configurations that previously took 150 minutes to capture manually.

Easy Access
I placed the report generation link in a common location in the UI—no hunting around to find it.

Results

The impact was immediate and dramatic:

Service Testing Time
150 minutes → 3 minutes (98% reduction)

Overall Workflow
Integration Engineers went from commissioning and integrating 3 devices in 2 days to completing the same work in 1 day. That's 50% faster.

Time Savings
147-148 minutes saved per session. That's nearly 2.5 hours of highly skilled engineering time returned to actual engineering work.

User Reception
The engineers loved it. When you cut someone's most frustrating task from 2.5 hours to 3 minutes, you tend to get positive feedback.

What I Learned

Sometimes the best UX improvements aren't about making something look better—they're about eliminating unnecessary work entirely. The engineers didn't need a prettier interface for screenshot capture; they needed to stop capturing screenshots manually.

Even with tight time and budget constraints, you can make a massive impact if you focus on the highest-pain areas. This wasn't a complete RMS redesign (which the navigation probably needed), but it solved the most acute problem users faced.

Automation wins when the task is repetitive, time-consuming, and doesn't require human judgment. All three applied here.

Future Considerations

The underlying navigation issues in RMS remain. While this solution works brilliantly for this specific workflow, a comprehensive redesign of RMS navigation would benefit all users across all workflows. For now, we've eliminated the most painful repetitive task, and that's a solid win.
